Cabinets are the integral component of our kitchen renovations.  The overall style of your kitchen is established by the look of your cabinetry.  Space planning begins with your kitchen layout, and the design is developed as we explore cabinet door style, material and finishes.

Communicating Style Online
Many times, there is uncertainty over the look desired, so the first step we take is to explore photos of kitchens for inspiration.  If you aren’t already familiar with them, Pinterest and Houzz provide online photo galleries that allow us to gain some personal style perspective.  Create accounts, if you don’t already have them, if you want to collect photos to share.  A secret “board” (Pinterest) and a private “ideabook” (Houzz) are created for our projects, where we will collaborate to communicate likes and dislikes with one another.
Usually it’s the determination between whether the doors will be painted or stained that’s the initial style distinction.

If the attraction is towards stained wood, then the species of the wood needs to be determined.  This is usually decided by the look that its grain offers.  A few most popular species are;

  • Maple- very hard, close-grained and minimal character
  • Alder (knotty or clear) or Cherry- soft, close-grained and visible arching grain
  • Oak, rift cut to keep grain linear- reasonable hardness, open-grained, visible and textured grain

Paint is usually applied to Maple (typically paint-grade, a smooth and firm surface) or MDF (medium-density fibreboard offers a very smooth surface).

 Sometimes special finishes are applied,
such as drybrushing or glazing.

In addition to paint and stain, another popular material is thermally-fused laminate (TFL).  Technology has advanced incredibly in this area.  The textures and durability have to be seen and felt to appreciate.  There are further doors, such as aluminum and glass, that will be covered during an in-person meeting, but this is an overview of the most common.

The other main factor that determines the overall look of a kitchen is the cabinet doorstyle.  Click the buttons below to explore cabinet door styles, and other materials & fixtures required for your renovation.

for your kitchen and bathroom renovation.
